This morning I had my last look at my new book, The Only Ones, then I sent it off to the publisher for the final shoeshine before it decamps to the printing press. Yes, it’s not going to hit the shelves until September 13, 2011, but for all intents and purposes, it’s done. There may a tweak here or there, but the work that remains is primarily of the marketing and PR variety. I wish the book goodluck and godspeed and I pledge that I’m going to do my darndest to promote the heck out of it, because I like the little guy. I truly do. And I hope you do too.
Over the next few months, I’ll be releasing teasers for The Only Ones and updating any news and reviews. Right now, I’m very excited to show off the cover, which was created by high school friend Lisa Ericson, the same uber-talented artist who designed this nifty web site. I think the image is a stunningly evocative depiction of the dual natures of the book: dark but whimsical, simple but mysterious. Perfect. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have the unbelievably kind words of James Dashner, author of The Maze Runner trilogy, emblazoned across the top. If you haven’t read his books (which also include The 13th Reality series and the Jimmy Fincher saga), then you’ve missed out on some of today’s most imaginative, thrilling and heartfelt adventures for teenagers. I’m jealous of all the kids who are discovering his writing for the first time. James gets it.
There are many others to thank in the upcoming months, but there is time. So much time. For now, the cover (click on it for a big version):
